How I Grow Up Poor and Work My Way Through CollegeRecently I was asked if there was a way to write a sample essay about living in poverty. As someone who has lived in poverty and come out of it many times, this is a problem that people of all races and backgrounds face. I thought I would write a short article about living in poverty and then write about how I grew up poor work my way through college.I'm currently going to college and I'm hoping to attend a four year college or university for graduate school. Being a minority on campus made it a little more difficult than it would have been a few years ago. When I was in high school, the whole thing with the 'busing in' policy started to happen. A school was missing in a lot of kids from other districts because the school was having funding issues.For example, a neighborhood might send their kids to a day care center or group homes. The students were paid less money than their peers and the schools were on a limited budget. As you can imagine, parents in these schools and living in the neighborhood felt very uncomfortable about sending their children to a school that was using these methods.So how did I write a sample essay about living in poverty? Well, I had to figure out how to put together an essay where I could say something about the fact that I grew up poor and the fact that I went through school and still came out a successful person. This wasn't a typical college story. This was something that I had to do on my own.The first thing I did was start talking about how I got by as a kid. This meant using things like how I worked odd jobs at gas stations, how I cleaned houses and rode the bus to school. What I did during those years and how I overcame poverty.Then I moved on to middle school. I talked about how I had friends that took me out to eat every night. I talked about how I went to the movies. And I talked about how my parents never worried about how much money I was making or what my grades were.I us ed the stories in middle school to talk about how I overcame my life's struggle and learned to become financially stable. I ended the essay by talking about how I was a good student throughout high school and earned my GED. These are the things that I loved about school and why I decided to go.Then I started college and my life changed. I learned a lot about who I was, what I wanted out of life and the fact that I didn't know where I would be in five years. So now when I talk about living in poverty, I talk about the challenges I faced as a kid and then how I worked hard to overcome them.
